Botox® has been used for nearly two decades to treat various medical conditions. 11 million Botox procedures are performed annually with approval in over 75 countries worldwide. It is usually utilized to help reduce facial lines.
We use the muscles of our face continuously, and over time, the muscle contraction will produce visible lines on the face. Those that can be treated with Botox are known as dynamic lines because they are caused by overactive muscles. Scowl lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet are the most common dynamic lines that will reveal a man’s age. Unfortunately, the lines will continue to get worse and become deeper with continual muscle activity and age. Luckily, Botox can reverse the process.
Botox works by temporarily weakening the targeted facial muscles. During treatment, a series of tiny injections containing very small doses of Botox are administered to the facial muscles. In the coming weeks, the aforementioned dynamic lines fade, giving the face a younger, wrinkle-free look. The effect of Botox injections lasts about three to four months, and in some cases, longer. Duration is determined by a patient’s genetics and the amount of Botox injected. Some side effects may occur, though they are rare. These will be discussed at the consultation.
When to start Botox is an important point. Botox is the only wrinkle preventer. The earlier you start the less lines and wrinkles you will eventually have. Once the lines are etched in the skin, Botox will be less effective at improving the lines, but more effective at reducing the muscle activity and preventing the lines from getting worse.
In order to recapture a more youthful look, fillers may be utilized to rejuvenate a man’s face, giving him, a younger appearance. Unlike Botox, which effects the lines indirectly by weakening the muscle that cause the lines, fillers work directly on improving the appearance of the lines.
Fillers like JuvedermTM, Restylane®, VolumaTM, Radiesse®, and Belotero® are used to “wind back the clock.”
Juvederm has been FDA-approved for nearly a decade. It provides instantaneous results that last 6 – 9 months depending on the area that is treated. With an injection via a tiny needle, Juvederm replenishes what is known as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural complex sugar that is already in our body. It diminishes as the skin cells age and become exposed to environmental pollutants and ultraviolet rays. It is part of what gives volume to the skin, and with a treatment of Juvederm, the volume is restored.
Restylane was the first FDA-approved, non-animal based injectable type of dermal filler. It has been successfully used more than 10 million times, globally. It is hyaluronic acid that is used to treat both deep and fine lines. The improvement can last up to nine months.
Like Juvederm and Restylane, Voluma is a form of hyaluronic acid. It is specifically formulated to be injected more deeply than the other fillers to provide volume enhancement primarily in the midface. This is the area that tends to lose volume as both men and women age. In addition to the volume correction at the site of the injection it lifts the skin to improve the nasolabial lines and can help define the jawline. It is specifically designed to give facial contours a younger look, and the results can last up to two years.
Radiesse is a dermal filler used to reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is well known for reducing the “marionette” lines that extend from your nose to the corner of your mouth. The treatment can last 9 – 12 months.
When hyaluronic acid mixes with water in the skin, it fills in the wrinkles and lines. Belotero is used to treat both moderate lines, like the nasolabial lines and the marionette lines as well as fine lines around the eyes. The treatment can last 6 – 9 months.
Fillers and injectables may have some side effects, which will be discussed during the doctor-patient consultation.
